Leadership & Command Core
Leadership turns your commander into an active part of the empire through a unique command vessel, talents, equipment, crew, and field experience.
Unlocking Leadership
Leadership is introduced through Command Directives. Follow the Leadership directive shown in your journal to recover and activate the Command Core. The Leadership screen remains locked until that story operation is complete.
Command Directives are guided operation chains rather than a second research tree. They track milestones, timed tasks, and mission steps, then reveal the next objective as the current one is completed. The guide intentionally does not reproduce the full chain or its rewards.
The Command Vessel
Your Command Core is represented by one persistent command vessel. It is not a normal shipyard unit and is not counted as a stack of ordinary ships.
- Attach it at dispatch — when the vessel is ready at the mission's origin, it can accompany an eligible fleet and contribute its own combat profile and equipped effects.
- Location matters — the vessel can dock at your planets, moons and outposts, as well as alliance stations you may use. It must be at the same origin as the fleet it joins.
- Relocation takes time — moving the vessel between docks is a dedicated Leadership movement, so plan where your next operations will launch.
- One assignment at a time — a vessel that is travelling, refitting, repairing, recovering, or already attached cannot join another operation.
- Busy means locked — while committed to a fleet or station defense, the vessel cannot be moved, repaired, refitted, or attached elsewhere.
- It can be hurt, not permanently lost — hull damage carries between operations. If the vessel is disabled, it enters recovery instead of disappearing forever.
Combat and Fleet Effects
In battle, the command vessel fights as its own group with hull, shields, a weapon profile, and any defensive or repair capabilities supplied by its loadout. Some Leadership effects improve only the vessel, some help the attached fleet, and others affect a docked planet or the whole empire. The Command Core UI labels each effect's scope.
Leadership can influence attack, protection, targeting, repair, mobility, cargo, reconnaissance, espionage, production, research, and other strategic roles. The exact result depends on the build you assemble; this guide does not publish a complete effect catalog.
A command vessel cannot normally dispatch as a fleet by itself. The exception is a solo Scout Camp operation when its fitted build provides the required espionage capability.
Command XP and Levels
The command vessel gains experience from active play. Mission rewards require the vessel to be ready at the origin, attached when the operation is dispatched, and still participating when the qualifying result resolves, unless the source explicitly says otherwise.
- Successful mining returns and dangerous mining encounters.
- Anomaly investigations and other survey operations.
- Pirate bases, expeditions, and wormhole runs.
- Leadership directive milestones.
- Completed laboratory research, which grants a smaller amount without attaching the vessel.
Command XP uses separate daily efficiency pools for repeated activity categories. The anomaly pool is shared by a Survey that discovers an anomaly, an ordinary completed anomaly investigation, and a dangerous anomaly result: each qualifying Command XP reward advances the same daily counter, so later anomaly Command XP becomes less efficient and eventually stops until the daily reset shown in the Command Core. This affects only Command XP, not Survey signal chances, Investigate loot, or rested charges. Exact internal multipliers are intentionally omitted.
The command-vessel level cannot exceed your highest Research Lab level. Experience earned at the cap does not bank progress into the following level, so improve a lab before continuing to pursue Command XP.
Talent Lanes
Levels award points for a three-lane talent tree. Talents have prerequisites, and later choices build on earlier investments.
Military
Fleet combat, command-vessel durability, tactical pressure, repair, and military logistics.
Economy
Planetary extraction, workforce, construction, mining, cargo, and industrial support.
Science
Research, sensors, anomalies, expeditions, espionage, and unusual discoveries.
Your commander archetype also unlocks themed Leadership perks as the vessel develops. These complement the archetype without preventing investment in any talent lane.
You can rebuild the talent allocation under the conditions shown in the Command Core. Reset availability, waiting periods, and any cost are displayed before confirmation; they are not hidden rules.
Conditional Archetype Perks
Archetype perks unlock at command-vessel milestones. The Command Core shows their exact values; the important activation conditions are:
- Warlord: local rewards require the vessel to be attached to the qualifying pirate-base or patrol operation. Its light-ship protection is likewise attached-fleet only; the late ship-industry benefit is global.
- Industrialist: field-yield support requires an attached mining fleet. Open Sector Safety can prevent pirate raids only for an attached Open-space mining fleet at or below the ship-count limit shown by the UI. A successful mining return can temporarily boost the origin planet; the energy-surplus benefit is global.
- Scientist: anomaly-survey speed and planetary research support depend on a ready vessel at the launch or research planet. Fuel support applies to an attached fleet, while the late artifact-control slot is global.
- Explorer: anomaly, wormhole and expedition recovery bonuses apply to the relevant local operation; route speed applies to the attached fleet. The late artifact-discovery modifier is global, but the underlying discovery chance remains hidden.
- Diplomat: bounty, trading, alliance-pact and workforce benefits are global, but each still requires its named source: eligible contracts, applicable trade, active allied-alliance pacts, or a fully staffed planet with surplus workers.
Modules and Refitting
Modules define the vessel's equipment build. Slots cover broad roles such as specialization systems, auxiliary support, weapons, engines, armor, and shields. A module may affect the vessel itself, its fleet, its current dock, or the empire globally.
- Modules can be recovered from eligible Leadership rewards and difficult operations.
- Modules have different grades and strengths; the reward panel and Command Core show the actual item you found.
- Equipping or replacing hardware can require a refit period. The vessel is unavailable for missions until the refit completes.
- Effects with a local scope only work while the command vessel is at the relevant planet or attached to the relevant fleet.
This guide deliberately describes module families rather than listing every module or every possible roll.
Command Crew
Crew contracts are Leadership equipment with named specialists and bridge roles. Assign crew to unlocked positions to shape the Command Core toward combat, industry, science, navigation, intelligence, or support.
- Crew can be earned from eligible Leadership missions and reward sources.
- Additional crew positions open as the command vessel develops.
- A specialist's description and effect scope are shown before assignment.
- Crew can be reassigned while the vessel is in a state that permits fitting changes.
There is no full crew roster in this guide: discovering individual officers and stronger contracts is part of progression.
Repair, Recovery, and Planning
Ordinary hull damage can be repaired from a valid dock using the resources, time, and conditions displayed by the Leadership screen. Recovery after the vessel is disabled is a separate state. Neither process can be bypassed by attaching the vessel to another mission.
A good Leadership plan therefore has three parts: choose a talent direction, fit modules and crew whose scopes match the intended operation, and move the vessel to the launch point before the fleet is needed.
